Roasting is a popular dry heat cooking type that is great for cooking many large pieces of meat, including cooked and uncooked hams. Roasting is pretty much the same as baking and is very often the most popular way to cook ham.
When you roast a ham, you take the skin off and the fat layer is left on to help add flavor and to keep the meat nice and moist while it cooks. The ham should be let to stand at room temp for about two hours before you cook it.
There are a number of ways to roast or bake a ham, and these will vary based upon whether the ham is cooked or not. Some of the recipes may call for your ham to be based throughout the cooking. However, keep in mind that basting your ham with its own juice can make it more salty.
Roasting can be used for cooking all kinds of ham. One of the things that you need to keep in mind when roasting your ham is if you have a cooked or an uncooked ham. An uncooked ham has to have an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. A fully cooked ham should have an internal temperature of 140 degrees.

This type of ham is typically a wet cured city ham. It does not actually need to be cooked further and you can eat it cold from the package. However, heating it up will bring out more of the flavor and the natural juices. One of the most common ways to roast a fully cooked ham is to cover it. After you trim the skin and a bit of the fat, put the ham in a baking pan with the fat side facing up. A half ham should be put in with the cut side face down.
Then you will add about one cup of water to the pan. Cover it totally with foil. Put it in your preheated oven and roast it. How much you roast it depends on the ham’s weight. Figure on about 16 minutes per pound for your fully cooked ham.
You should bake the ham until the inside temperature is about 135 degrees. Let the ham sit on the counter for 15 minutes before you carve it. The temperature will rise to about 140 degrees now. If you use a glaze you should put it on in the last 30 min of cooking.
After you trim the skin and fat, put the ham in a baking pan with the fat side facing up. A half ham should be put with the cut side facing down. Put about ¼ an inch of water in the bottom of the pan. Don’t cover your ham. Follow the cooking directions for the fully cooked ham above.
Spiral Sliced Ham
This type of ham is usually fully cooked and ready to eat. If you want to warm it up, you should wrap it tightly in aluminum foil before you bake it.
Put the ham with the cut side facing down into a large piece of foil. Pull up the sides of the foil and add about ½ cup of water. Fold the foil very tightly around the ham and then put it in the oven to bake. Follow the cooking directions above.
Dry Cured Ham
After you soak and wash your country ham it should be ready to cook. You can cook your ham covered. To do this, put the ham skin side up in your roaster. Put in about five cups of water. Put the cover on the top of the roaster. Put it into your oven at 375 degrees.
