How To Prep For SAT (A simple guideline I followed)

March 21, 2014 |  by  |  Parenting  |  No Comments

The date of your SAT test is looming ever closer, and you are beginning to sweat bullets because you don’t feel prepared. Thankfully, there are many things that you can do to prepare for that big test and pull off a great score. Since your future education opportunities will depend in part on your SAT score, it is important that you take your test seriously. Here are the top 5 ways you can prepare for the upcoming SAT and get a score that you can be proud of.

1.       Take Practice Tests

Practice tests may seem like a waste of time to you now, but they are invaluable for preparing your mind for the questions that will be on the SAT. While the questions on the SAT will not mirror the practice tests exactly, they will at least be similar. It is a good idea to set aside 3 hours and 45 minutes once every couple of weeks to take a full-length practice test. This will get you used to the idea of taking the timed SAT and will help you to relax more in a testing setting. Each time you take a practice test, evaluate your performance afterwards and identify the areas that you need to focus on the most. Then study those areas until you feel confident in your ability to get a better score in those subjects.

2.       Know The Structure Of The Test

If you know the structure of the test, you will be able to determine which areas you need to focus on the most and not waste your time on sections that are easy for you. It is important for you to know that the SAT is formatted in such a way that the easiest questions come first and the harder questions come last. This means that you shouldn’t spend a lot of time on the first questions if you can help it, because you will need that time for the tougher questions that come later. When you take your practice tests at home, it may be helpful for you to have someone time exactly how long it takes you to finish each section so that you can learn which sections are taking you too long to complete. That way you can focus on improving your time in those sections.

3.       Study!

It may seem obvious, but one of the most important things you can do to prepare for your SAT is study, study, study! It may be tempting for you to study subjects that you enjoy and are already good at, but you will need to learn some discipline and focus on subjects that you aren’t very good at. You may want to devote a large portion of your time to a subject that you dislike, then reward yourself with a subject that you do like after you complete the harder subject. If there are any words in the practice tests that you don’t understand, make sure you look them up in the dictionary before moving on.

4.       Learn Your Vocabulary

Many people skip over vocabulary because they assume it will be a very easy portion of the test. However, you may be surprised at how much you don’t know about vocabulary once you start studying it. Vocabulary is typically pretty fun to learn and shouldn’t take much time to become comfortable with. Try creating flash cards that you can study either on your own or with a partner, and you will learn that vocabulary is a fun and important section for raising your SAT score.

5.       Write Plenty Of Practice Essays

Many people dread the essay sections of the SATs because they don’t have a lot of experience writing essays on the spot. If you want to ace the essay section, you need to write plenty of practice essays until you become familiar with your ability to write about a variety of subjects. You may want to have someone else write down subjects for you so that you have no idea what you will be writing about until you come to the essay section of your practice test. This will help you prepare for the surprise subjects that you will encounter on your real SAT test.

Preparing for your SAT can actually be a fun and empowering process if you have a plan, study hard, and give yourself plenty of time to prepare.
